China's two most important scientific, technical and medical (STM) publishers are entering the global market. Science Press and Higher Education Press have signed co-operation agreements with Springer, the German STM specialist.
Springer will publish 36 Chinese journals jointly with the publishers, adding the content to its SpringerLink online service as the Chinese Library of Science.
Higher Education Press will launch 27 journals onto SpringerLink over the next two years under its "Frontiers of" title range covering chemistry, electrical engineering, law, mathematics, mechanical engineering, philosophy and physics. Springer told IWR that Chinese editors at Higher Education Press will select the best articles from over 1,700 university journals by a peer-review process and translate the articles into English for publication on SpringerLink.
Science Press will release a range of English language journals onto SpringerLink, including Chinese Science Bulletin, the most highly cited magazine for Chinese research literature.
Higher Education Press is the publishing arm of the Chinese education ministry, whilst Science Press is the is the publisher of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
China is a hot topic amongst information providers. Recently Reed Elsevier boss Sir Crispin Davis said China was a core part of the growth strategy for Elsevier and LexisNexis. Chinese companies have made major inroads into western industry with the take over of the IBM personal computer division and car maker MG Rover in 2005.
