The National Archives (TNA) has revealed it will fund a scheme to make 250,000 pages of the National Register of Archives list available online. It is hoped the digitisation project will also encourage smaller archives to add their own material online.
The register itself is a collection of records detailing the stock of archives from around the UK as well as further afield. The National Archives say that the register contains historical records of 50,000 individuals, 9,000 families, 32,000 businesses and 100,000 other organisations. By having the contents online TNA hope that the material becomes more accessible to researches as well as raising the catalogues profile.
Commenting on the project, Nick Kingsley, head of the National Advisory Services at TNA said, “By providing online access to these hidden treasures, The National Archives will continue to open up an extraordinary world of historical knowledge to researchers. This project will not only raise the profiles of these archives across the globe, but will also reinforce the unique role they play in the history of the country and their local areas’.
