New medical journal to be published next year
Blackwell Publishing , recently acquired by Wiley , is to launch a new medical journal, Clinical and Translational Science (CTS), in January 2008.
The bi-monthly CTS will focus on translational studies – sometimes known as “bench to bedside” or “personalised medicine” – which looks at ways of bridging between basic lab science and the clinical arena.
It aims to publish new research in the area and provide direction and support to a readership of investigators, trainees, regulatory bodies and industry leaders.
Blackwell said that CTS would be published as an independent, peer-reviewed journal and edited by Arthur Feldman, professor of medicine at Jefferson Medical College in the US.
The journal’s global readership will cover a range of clinical specialities, including genomics and pharmaceutical product development.
Laura Colantoni, vice-president and publisher of medical journals at Blackwell, said: “This new area of medicine is filled with remarkable scientific innovations and holds the potential to transform human health. Launching this journal allows us to partner with some of the world’s pioneering clinicians and researchers to create a new forum that will help spur continued research and funding.”
Translational medicine is a growing area. In the past, drugs have been developed independently of clinical practice, but some drugs companies are building translational medicine groups to make connections between basic research and clinical medicine.
Another periodical in the area, the Journal of Translational Medicine , was launched online by BioMed Central in 2003. CTS will be available both in print form and online through Blackwell Synergy.
