Howard Hughes Institute extends its OA wings

Research group pays the processing charges

The Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) has extended its reach into open access (OA) publishing with the announcement that it will pay the article processing charge for all research published by the HHMI within BioMed Central journals. The deal is an extension of an agreement that saw HHMI announce an open access policy whereby research it has funded must be deposited in an open access repository within six months of publication.

Under the terms of this new agreement articles will be made available for free in their final published form and deposited at the PubMed Central database. The new terms take affect for all articles submitted after September 1, 2007.

Matthew Cockerill, publisher of BioMed Central said this latest development will enable HHMI to increase its impact and visibility for its open access publications. HHMI will be using the BioMed Central postpay membership system to enable this open access development. Postpay provides detailed reports on research articles published under the scheme as well as invoicing on a quarterly and monthly basis.
