Even if you pride yourself on filing the contents of your computer in strict accordance with the principles of the Dewey Decimal system, sooner or later the chances are that a rogue file will escape into the depths of your computer’s hard disk.

A desktop search tool can help herd the offending file back into the safety of your carefully labelled folder system with very little effort on your part or time spent scratching your head.

We looked at desktop search engines from Google, Yahoo, MSN and Copernic. Bear in mind that the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) has warned against using the 'search across computers' function in a February 9th press release.
