Record numbers of people are consulting the National Health Service's e-library to help them make healthcare decisions.
In the run-up to the National electronic Library for Health's (NeLH) third birthday, web site visitor numbers increased substantially.
In October, over 200,000 users visited the site, a 25 per cent increase compared to the month before. A year ago, in November 2002, 50,000 users visited the e-library.
The NeLH is targeted primarily at healthcare professionals to support knowledge-based decision making. It is also designed to provide the public and patients with the same access to information to as their doctors and carers.
Alison Turner, NeLH libraries co-ordinator, said: "This is fantastic news for NeLH and due in most part to the hard work of the health community librarians and trainers.
"During the autumn they have significantly stepped up their efforts to raise awareness of the site which in turn means that more healthcare professionals are using the site's evidence-based resources."
Information resources available to users through the e-library include the Cochrane Library as well as a number of specialist libraries.
