Business information provider Factiva has ramped up its presence in the taxonomy market with the acquisition of Synapse Corporation, a taxonomy information and tools provider. Synapse will be integrated into the Factiva Taxonomy Services Group.
US based Synapse will add expertise in taxonomies for industry vertical markets, science, technology and medicine (STM) and the arts to the existing Factiva taxonomy offerings. A team of over 50 taxonomy, lexicography, indexing and software experts will join the Factiva fold.
Under the terms of the agreement Factiva has also acquired the rights to the Sympatica software tools for building and maintaining taxonomies, thesauri and ontologoies. Taxonomy directory website www.taxonomywarehouse.com, which was published by Synapse, has also been acquired as part of the deal.
"With the market for taxonomy services rapidly growing, Factiva has experienced tremendous demand," said vp of content Simon Alterman of the deal.
Trish Yancey and Dave Clarke, the co-founders of Synapse will join Factiva as co-directors of Factiva Taxonomy Services, the division founded in 2000.
This deal is the latest acquisition of a small specialist application and service providers, in February London based reputation management specialist 2B Reputation Intelligence was acquired.
