CrossRef launches URL and text search

Two new search technologies developed for DOI searching by interlinking specialist

By Mark Chillingworth, Information World Review 22 Aug 2005

Searching for academic and professional journal articles has been simplified with two new search services from linking specialist CrossRef. OpenURL and text search tools have been developed to help researchers search the 17 million documents registered by CrossRef.

CrossRef OpenURL is one of the information industries first NISO Z39.88-2004 compliant resolver technologies. The National Information Standards Organisation (NISO) defines the framework for OpenURL link resolving technology.

CrossRef OpenURL acts as a digital object identifier (DOI) search tool. DOI act like URLs and provide content with a permanent link that will remain with the content even if the journal it was published-in moves from one publishing house to another, or ceases to exist. A DOI will ensure that the research article is not lost.

CrossRef has also launched www.crossref.org/guestquery a DOI text interface that enables users to search DOI tagged content by searching by author, article title, journal, page or year of publication.

CrossRef was founded by publishers that use the DOI technology and operates as a DOI registration agency. Search engine Google and CrossRef are in an alliance which provides academic publishers with a Google search engine.
