BL houses UK Patent Office search facility

St Pancras is the new home of UK patent searching for business users

By Mark Chillingworth 05 Sep 2005

From today the British Library at St Pancras, London is home to the search facility for the UK Patent Office. The UK Patent office has moved its search facility into the British Library to create a one-stop-shop for patent research in the UK.

The new British Library (BL) Business & Intellectual Property Centre, which opened last year, will be the home for the search facility, providing business researchers access to business information on patents, markets and marketing.

Users of the Business & Intellectual Property Centre reading room will also be given access to databases of patents and designs, trademark search files and resources that are not available online.

The UK Patent Office said the new combined service will be a "superior service in London for database searching of patents, trademarks and designs". BL and the UK Patent Office plan to work more closely. Staff at the BL Business & Intellectual Property Centre have received training by the Patent Office.

Trade marks registrations were up more than 2,500 to 49,913 in 2004, according to latest figures from the UK Patent Office. The figure for 2003 was 47,332.
