Cambridge snaps up CABI science journals

University Press makes major inroads into STM sector with deal

By Mark Chillingworth 05 Jul 2006

CABI, the scientific, technical and medical (STM) publisher has sold its journals division to Cambridge University Press (CUP).

"This sale reflects CABI' s newly refocused strategic direction to strengthen our position as a publisher of database products and books," said Caroline McNamara of the decision to pull out of the journal publishing market. CABI published a portfolio of society journals and its own titles.

CUP took control of the 15 titles on July 1. The deal is part of an acknowledged strategy to increase CUP's presence in the STM market. Andrea Powell, CABI executive director of publishing said CUP was chosen because of it's not for profit status, something both publishers share in common.

Until July 1 CUP published 196 journals predominantly in the humanities area. Ian Banbery, journals sales and marketing director at CUP told IWR in April that the organisation was looking to increase its emphasis in STM. "We are going to make a significant investment in journals over the next 18 months," he said. Business development manager Tristan Collier told IWR the focus on STM was because the journals are "more profitable".
