JISC funds HE gateway to FoI

Academics and university information professionals receive FoI resource

By Tracey Caldwell 17 Jul 2006

Higher education is to get its own web gateway to information about the Freedom of Information Act (FoI) and information governance legislation, such as the Data Protection Act.

JISC has awarded £200,000 to FoI experts from Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU) and MIMAS (University of Manchester) to develop the Information Governance Gateway.

The gateway was commissioned after a survey of institutions revealed that HE information professionals wanted a centralised information bank about compliance with information governance legislation. The gateway will also be available to members of the public looking for information on HE institutions. There are no plans to allow them to submit a request for information under the Freedom of Information Act or other laws via the website.

It will include information and analysis of key legislation, official guidance and best practice, as well as relevant journals, magazines, books and blogs . The intention is to reduce duplication of effort and provide consistent guidance. Information will also be provided on other areas, such as copyright and records management.

Project leader Steve Wood and his colleague Chris Watts, both based at LJMU’s School of Business Information, will be working with Manchester Information and Associated Services , the national academic data centre based at the University of Manchester, to develop the gateway.

Wood says: “The gateway will put members of the public quickly in contact with the right people to answer their query. They will also benefit from a disclosure log index when it comes online, allowing a simple search across all 80 institutions’ disclosure logs.”

A demonstration version of the gateway will be available in the autumn and the site will be launched formally in November.
