Macmillan Medical Communications (MMC), a division of the scientific, technical and medical publisher that includes Nature, has launched Dissect Medicine (www.dissectmedicine.com), the first collaborative medical news website.
The site, launched jointly with Nature Clinical Practice, the medical journal division of Nature Publishing Group, indexes and ranks international medical news. Aimed at clinicians, healthcare professionals and the general public, the site includes general interest articles as well as basic research. Categories include clinical trials, complementary medicine, medical ethics and regulatory information. Hundreds of news stories are already available on the site. Each story is displayed with a headline and a short synopsis. Users can see the original story by clicking on the headline.
Sources include established general news sites such as the BBC and The Guardian as well as specialist science and medical sites such as Nature and the British Medical Journal. Users submit news stories for review with tags and keyword, which are then ranked by the user group, so that only the most relevant articles are displayed as headline stories. Users can leave comments on each story.
There are plans to develop Japanese, German and Spanish versions of Dissect Medicine.
The service is free, but users are required to register to gain access.
