Atypon to develop new software platform for JSTOR

Online journal archive to get major upgrade

By Daniel Griffin, Information World Review 29 Jan 2007

The publishing software specialist, Atypon , is to develop a customised content delivery platform for the not-for-profit journal archival organisation JSTOR.

JSTOR which provides online, full-text searches of digitised archived journals, the oldest dating back to 1665m, will work hand in hand with the Californian based software company to develop the new system. The improved version is expected to be more flexible in its support and delivery of the archived content for its scholarly audience.

The JSTOR collection of 800 online journals is expected to grow for its user-base across 3,200 institutions worldwide. Using the Atypon Premium software for its framework, the global infrastructure will still be managed by JSTOR staff in both the US and UK.

Commenting on the need for a new implementation Michael Spinella, Executive Director of JSTOR said “JSTOR’s mission is to utilise technology to preserve scholarship and to encourage the widest possible access and use of the archive in education and research”, he went on to say “Advancing access over the next decade will require a network infrastructure with features and functionality that contribute meaningfully to the work of scholars and students.”

Georgios Papadopoulos, Atypon founder and CEO echoed this saying “By working with JSTOR, we will not only help to advance their important mission but will enhance Atypon’s reliable and scaleable electronic publishing platform.”
