The latest journal joins two other BMES publications at Springer - Annals of Biomedical Engineering and Cellular and Molecular Bioengineering.
The first issue of the new quarterly journal will appear in March 2010, aiming to become a forum for research on all aspects of cardiovascular physiology and medical treatment.
It will present a wide spectrum of research, from basic to translational, covering cardiovascular physiology and medical treatment. CVET will also offer academic and industrial investigators a platform for the dissemination of research using engineering principles and methods to advance knowledge and technological solutions related to the cardiovascular system.
The journal will cover a range of topics from subcellular to systems level including implantable medical devices, tissue biomechanics, functional imaging, surgical devices and diagnostic instruments. Ajit Yoganathan of the Georgia Institute of Technology, US, has been named its chief editor.
Robert Tranquillo, chair of the BMES publications committee, said: “We expect the journal to flourish, given the broad interest in this topic among academic researchers and medical device companies.”
According to Springer, the journal is launched at a time when advances in cardiovascular research and therapy are rapidly developing. Michael Weston, senior editor of Biomedical Engineering at Springer, concluded: “Springer is committed to helping the BMES accomplish its mission of publishing the best possible journals in biomedical engineering and bioengineering.
The journal announcement follows just days after Springer Science+Business Media was sold to the Swedish private equity firm EQT Partners and Government of Singapore Investment Corp for £2.1bn.
